THE BULL AND GATE

Kentish Town, 10.01.06

Dogstand take the stage at the Bull and Gate in typically alternative style, with lead singer and sax player Carli simply stating that “We are Dogstand, we drink tea” before launching into the foot stomping opener, “ Little Johnny” – possibly one of the most unlikely tunes that the slightly more mature tea drinker would listen to.

Without stopping to do more than thank the crowd for their appreciation for one number and obligatory supping of liquid refreshment, (absinthe, possibly…?)they launch headlong into the next.  The ensuing eclectic combination of old and new being the order of the day – lead vocalist roles swap almost symbiotically between Carli and Graeme (rhythm guitar/songwriter), with the latter putting on a display that would have been more in keeping with watching the Duracell bunny on amphetamines.

cracking melodies are cranked up at spine tingling pace and volume through the PA, most notably “Seasonal Adjustment” and “Rhubarb”, both tunes that have a fantastic marriage of vocal and instrumental talent and the kind of rhythm that simply gets under your skin and itches like something that the doctor might have to give you a shot of antibiotics for... this, coupled with the level of overall stage presentation (girls, note the topless drummer…..), guaranteed a whirlwind 30 minute set that you just don’t want to end.

One of the most refreshing things about listening to this band perform is the complete lack of cover material – the originality with which they approach their music writing clearly echoes through the content of their material is on it’s own from current trends and genres and ultimately delivers a unique, honest and edgy sound that is miles away from the blandness and conformity of commercialised music. Viva la Dogstand!
